ABOUT VERDANT TILE
Mary Philpott is a member of the Roycrofter's At Large Association based in East Aurora, New York. A native of Oakville, Ontario, Mary earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree with distinction at the University of Guelph focusing on Art History and Archeology. Mary studied at the School of Crafts and Design at Sheridan College and went on to a 3-year residency at the Harbourfront Craft Studios in Toronto. After her residency, where Mary developed her pottery table ware line called Wandering Fire Pottery, a studio was created in the west end of Toronto. All tiles are made by hand in Mary's Artisan studio in Seagrave, Ontario, Canada. The tiles are made in a traditional tile making method, all hand drawn and carved and hand pressed with unique imagery and subject matter. Multiple firings and layers upon layers of transparent jewel tone glazes that are all applied meticulously by hand give the tiles a look that is unique to Verdant Tile Co. Inspired by the color, narration and design of Medieval Illuminated Books, Tapestries and Architecture, Mary's work in tile and in sculpture explores the story of Flora and Fauna of her surrounding landscape. Mary also produces unique sculptural pieces reflecting the animals and avian that she illustrates in her two dimensional tile. Further studies have included Anthropology and Archeology at McMaster University, and Ceramics Intensives at Alfred University, NY. She is a 2015 recipient of the Helen Copeland Award from the Ontario Craft Council, for an Established Artist working in her field. Her membership affiliations include: Roycroft Renaissance Artisans, Craft Ontario, Tile Heritage Organization, The William Morris Society, TACS : Tile & Architectural Ceramics Society, Britain, AIR Vallauris, France. The tiles are all designed for installation in fireplaces and hearth, kitchen and bath. Verdant Tiles all have a notch on the back for hanging. Mary is no longer making tiles. Once our inventory is gone, they will not be available any longer.
